Its been coming for a while but now its all official. Wayne Bennett will leave the Broncos at the end of the season.
Bennett was contracted to the Broncos until the end of the 2009 season but that contract will be cut short at Bennetts request.
It will end a 20 year run at the club in which Bennett won Premierships in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2000 and 2006.
He was close to leaving the Broncos a couple of years ago when it was said he had signed a contract to coach the Sydney Roosters, but he later asked to be released from that contract to remain at the Broncos. Since then its been an uncomfortable stay in Brisbane and it seems Bennett moved on before he was pushed.
Bennett has said he wants to coach again and that means the scramble will now be on in what is sure to be one of the biggest coaching merry-go-rounds we have ever seen.
The hot tip at the moment is that he will end up at the St George/Illawarra Dragons where Nathan Brown has basically been treading water for years now.
Another thing to remember is that St Helens need a coach heading into 2009 after Daniel Anderson decided 2008 would be his last year in England. It is a long shot, but stranger things have happened.
Anderson has said that if he gets another NRL coaching job he would want to be based in NSW. But to turn down the Broncos coaching role quite frankly would be stupid in my opinion.
What ever the case, its all happening and coaches around the world will all be shaking in their boots.
