James Hooper of Fox Sports is reporting that the Canterbury Bulldogs are considering making a 10 year, $11 million offer to Sydney Roosters center Latrell Mitchell. The deal would be the single largest in Rugby League history.
Poor old Latrell can’t stay out of the news cycle for more than a few hours, but my guess is this is the type of news most players like to hear!
The contract offer would eclipse the deal that the North Queensland Cowboys gave to forward Jason Taumalolo. At the time the length and size of that deal was questioned. Now…it looks like a bargain!
The South Sydney Rabbitohs were linked to Latrell Mitchell earlier this season after the retirement of Greg Inglis free’d up some salary cap space. The club however eventually signed James Roberts.
The Sydney Roosters will no doubt do everything they can to hold onto Mitchell, but this report shows that clubs are ready to line up to get Mitchell’s signature. As a young player, a goal kicker and a proven try scorer, Latrell tricks a lot of boxes. To look Mitchell in long term would solve a lot of problems at any club.
Right now however, that is a lot of noise about what Mitchell wants out of his career. It seems like he may have a lot of people pulling him in different directions. Hopefully he has a good support system around him. He will need it right now.
