Well a number of teams wanted him but it seems Wayne Bennett had his sights set on coaching the Dragons.
Bennett will take over from Nathan Brown at the end of the season as Brown becomes yet another lame duck coach who is forced to see out his time at the club knowing he has been deemed not up to the job by the clubs mangement.
Brows has had 6 years in charge of St George/Illawarra and his downfall basically was the fact the side is making the same dumb mistakes it was making when he first took over the club. They’ve had a heap of tallent come through the club and basically been a huge dissapointment.
If he ended up coaching another side, it would be a major surprise.
As for Bennett, he basically chose the Dragons.
Ironically one of the attractions to the club was the fact they have persisted with Brown for so long. The last thing Bennett needed was to move to Sydney only to find himself under pressure after one bad season.
He’ll get to take over a club that has a big junior base that does produce a lot of good talent.
He would also be concious of the history beghind the great St George name and no doubt would love to be the coach that took the Red V back to some of its former success.
The word is that one of Bennetts big targets for next season is Penriths Luke Rooney who he has had big wraps on since coaching him in the Australian Test side. Just the fact that Bennett is coaching at such a famous club will make the Dragons a favorite with a lot of off contract players.
The Dragons will need a bit of a clean out. You would expect some players will get a tap on the shoulder and told to move on as Bennett looks to bring in players that fit his style better.
Overall, its a great signing for the Dragons.
