Wouldn’t it be fantastic if once in a while you could turn up to a game of Rugby League and the major focus of the event you have turned up to was Rugby League?
I don’t know about you but I am sick to death with every single round of the Rugby League season needing to have a theme attached to it. How about we all just watch a game of football, as intended, and not feel the need to sit through endless lectures about how something or other is so important that we need to promote it endlessly while I’m just trying to watch a game of football.
Yesterday the Wests Tigers announced that they would adopt a theme at each home game in an effort to create a “unique atmosphere”. Anything to take attention away from what a basketcase the club is on and off the field I guess.
As League By The Fireplace noted on Twitter yesterday, maybe they should have a “Young halves make a tackle” round!
It is bad enough sitting through the gross commercialization of ANZAC Day as we hear officials and footballers trying to equate playing sport with the horrors of war as they wear camouflage on their jerseys that they ask you to buy at $180 a pop. I would love to know what percentage of the money from those jersey sales actually goes back to the RSL…
I’m sorry to say that Rugby League isn’t going to save the world. It is not going to cure all of societies ills. It is just a sport.
So can I please just sit back and watch this sport. I don’t need people I don’t know telling me how to live my life, what is important, what will make me happier or healthier, or how I can save the rain forests. I’m not here for any of that.
I’m here for a game of Rugby League. Nothing more, nothing less.
