The Canterbury Bulldogs have wasted no time in using the free’d up salary cap space that Andrew Fifita has left them with. It is expected that they will announce that they have signed English test captain and Leeds Rhino legend Kevin Sinfield on a two year deal.
Sinfield has informed the Rhinos of his intention to finally test himself in the National Rugby League and it is expected that once a transfer fee is agreed to the deal will be announced.
At 33 year of age Sinfield is making a move to the NRL later than any other Super League player we have ever seen. While he is a lock for the Rhinos I suspect the Bulldogs may have signed him to play in the halves, a position he has played for the Rhinos and for England in the past.
NRL fans will probably remember Kevin Sinfield mostly for the fact that an English Rugby League magazine named him the best player in the world in 2012. It was an announcement that was rightly ridiculous at the time and that most still use as a punch line for Rugby League related jokes.
Still, you have to admire Sinfield for deciding to take up the challenge of playing in the best competition in the world. It will be interesting to see how he handles playing for a big club like the Bulldogs. He could easily have ended up on a long list of English players that never had the guts to try his hand against the worlds best week in, week out. It seems that won’t be the case any more.
Whether or not it ends up being a good signing for the Bulldogs however is anyone’s guess…

Oh dear, your arrogance (or indeed, ignorance) never fails to amaze me.
‘English players that never had the guts to try his hand against the best, week in, week out’-ever thought maybe it’s more that they didn’t fancy moving to the other side of the world and leaving their family etc. to suggest that any rugby player is a coward for not wanting to play in the NRL is ridiculous, there are plenty of players more than good enough who have turned down the option because moving to the other side of the world just isn’t on the cards.
As a side note however I do think Sinfield is vastly overrated (ie to suggest at any point he was the the best player in the world is laughable) but he would definitely cope in the NRL. He also hasn’t played ‘lock’ for the rhinos for about 3 years. He’s been the captain of the most successful side in Super League so I think handling ‘playing for a big club like the bulldogs’ is a big of a non issue.
