Greg Inglis has re-signed with the Melbourne Storm through to the end of the 2012 season in a massive boost for the club and the code in general.
Inglis form has been outstanding this season and at just 21 years of age, Inglis is already one of the games superstars.
The deal is worth a reported $500,000 a year and the next time he comes off contract the NRL will have just signed off on its new TV deal, so Inglis can expect to cash in once again.
I would expect his next deal will be one of the first huge money deals done in the NRL under a raised salary cap.
With his ability to play fullback, wing and center at representative level, being an outstanding athlete and the fact he is already a Premiership winner, a Clive Churchill Medalist, a State Of origin winner and one of the first picked at rep level, Inglis has the opportunity to build the type of career that very few players have ever been able to.
If Inglis can win be part of an Australian World Cup winning side, at the age of 21 he can say he has achieved every major title in the game, with only a Dally M player of the Year medal and World Cup player of the Tournament and player of the final the only awards to have elluded him
I think one day, sooner rather than later, Greg Inglis will end up being named as Australian captain.
In the meantime though, his signing will let everyone with in the club focus on winning the Storms second straight Premiership, something no club had been able to do since the early 90’s when the Brosbane Broncos won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.
The Storm now have a number of their core superstars under contract for a long time which is good news. I’ve said on this web site before that I don’t want to see this amazing Storm team torn apart because of the salary cap, and it looks like with some hard work and a lot ot loyalty shown by both sides, the Storm have managed to wrap up their elite players for at least the next 4 years.
