Hazem El Masri is now the greatest point scorer in Australian Rugby League history.
The record was 2176 points and that was held by Andrew Johns.
El Masri took the record in his 292nd first grade game in a remarkable career that has seen him become the gold standard for goal kickers.
I think its amazing that after Darrell Halligan retired and set a standard for goal kicking many thought would never be beaten, the next cab off the rank stepped in and took goal kicking to the next level.
This is a very hard record to get. If you look at the players that break this record, they are only around for a year or two at most before they retire.
By breaking the record in the first game of the season El Masri has the opportunity to put the record figure out a long way and make it very hard for the next player to try and break.
If he played for just two more seasons he could conceivably put another 500 to 600 points on it. Considering the record has only just been surpassed in the past, he could make the record almost unbreakable!
Its an amazing record and very much like Rugby League that the record is held by a bloke born in Lebanon, who grew up in Sydney and who is a one club man.
Let hope he has a great season and makes the record his.
