Jamie Soward has been released by the St George/Illawarra Dragons with immediate effect. The move will allow him to join Super League club the London Broncos as a replacement for Craig Gower who recently left the club.
Soward’s fall from grace at the Dragons has been dramatic, and I think unfair. While his form was poor he had plenty of team mates at the Dragons who were not playing all that well either. Things seemed to change when Soward made the decision to sign with the Penrith Panthers on a four year deal that starts in 2014. From that point on it seems Dragons management had just had enough, and now Soward finds himself on his way to Super League.
Soward will be a welcome addition at the London Broncos where I believe he steps in and gives the club the best halfback in Super League. There is no doubt he will give the Broncos the best kicking game in Super League. If he can start running the ball more he has the ability to not only recapture his best form, but also has the ability to tear Super League apart.
How all of this effects his deal with the Panthers for next season is anyones guess. No doubt the Panthers will be happy to see him not stuck in reserve grade and unhappy for the next few months, but if Soward enjoys himself at London you at to wonder whether the Panthers would be willing to release him from his commitment to them.
