The Penrith Panthers have denied a report in Rugby League Week that they are making a bold bit to lure Wigan standoff Trent Barrett back to the National Rugby League.
Barrett is rumoured to be unhappy in England and the Panthers have been rumoured to be ready to swoop in and sign him, however the Panthers have said this is not the case and they do not have the salary cap space available.
Still, as usual in Rugby League, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
While its highly unlikely that Barrett will end up in Penrith, new that he isnt happy in England and wants out of the remaining two years of his contract with Wigan is sure to upset Warriors fans.
At this stage of the year most NRL clubs have their 2008 squad all but set in stone and have little to no room to move under the salary cap.
The Panthers have said they have little room left for any more players but with the club having already asked Tony Puletua and Luke Priddis if they want a release, you’d think they are more than open for any deals they can to free up the space to get the deal done.
Still, the more likley scenario is that Barrett will end up at another NRL club.
