The Canberra Raiders have sacked Todd Carney for being a serial dickhead and the NRL has said he will not be able to play for any other NRL team until the 2010 season.
Thank god, its about bloody time!
It seems as though the game has been on a bit of a cleansing recently, getting rid of the weak, the fragile and the stupid, and Carney is the latest to go.
I’ve said for a while now that the Raiders should get rid of him and pointed to Craig Gower and his career of off field stupidity as something the Raiders didn’t need to emulate with Carney.
Make no mistake though, this is a gutsy move by the Raiders and one they wouldn’t have taken lightly.
Of all the players that have left the NRL or been sacked in recent times, Carney is by far and away the best of the bunch. He is a very good halfback, plays week in week out and has the ability to control a game.
The Raiders gave Carney an ultimatum after his latest incident and I’m sure Carney and his management decided to call the Raiders bluff. It didn’t work….and now he is just an unemployed fool with a drinking problem.
The thought is he will now look to play in England or that toilet bowl on a union competition in France.
What ever the case, its refreshing to see the game getting rid of lots of bullshit in 2008.
Sonny Bill Williams, Mark Gasnier, Jason Ryles, Todd Carney….the constant drama this lot creates will not be missed.
The best part is that the Raiders haven’t missed a beat without him in the side. Terry Campese is playing the great football I always knew he had in him and the club had unearthed a decent young halfback thats standing up to the pressures of first grade really well.
At the end of the day it all comes back to the question: If you had a $400,000 contract to play footy for your local club, and the only thing you had to try had to do was not act like a complete moron during that time, do you think you could do it?
I have to say for $400,000 I’d give up drinking, Maccas….hell I’d even let Steve Folkes bad mouth my family and friends and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid!
